God works through his gracious promises to establish and strengthen saving faith in him. He stays faithful to those promises despite our failures, and he even works through those same failures to show us that he alone is the strength of our faith. We see this in the life of the patriarch, Abraham. God worked such a strong faith in him that Scripture calls him the father of believers. Such a faith is God’s work alone since Abraham on more than one occasion falls flat on his face in his faith. The same faithful and gracious God does the same for us and works the same faith and in us.
